Commemoration of October 17, 1961.That day, the Parisian police repressed a demonstration in favor of the independence of Algeria. The Prefect of Police was Maurice Papon. Historians working on this crackdown estimate that it left several hundred dead and missing, several dozen of whom were thrown into the Seine and drowned there.
Today's protesters are calling for the opening of state archives in both France and Algeria. They are also asking for France to recognize this repression as a state crime.
